The family of the late former Cabinet minister Simeon Nyachae is in mourning following the death of his eldest daughter, Mary Basweti Nyachae.

Basweti passed away on Tuesday afternoon, October 7, at MP Shah Hospital in Nairobi after a prolonged battle with cancer.

She had been hospitalised for several weeks, with the hospital recently appealing for blood donations to support her treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Basweti was the elder sister of lawyer Charles Nyachae, the current chairman of the Kenya School of Government.

How did Charles Nyachae mourn his sister?

Charles mourned Mary in a deeply emotional tribute. Reflecting on their lifelong bond, he described her as a loving, dependable soul whose struggle with illness had been evident.

He recounted arriving at her bedside just minutes before her passing, expressing heartfelt sorrow and spiritual comfort in her peaceful final moments.

His message conveyed profound grief, love, and faith, as he bid farewell to his sister with the hope of reunion on the resurrection morning.

“This is painful, but I have watched you struggle. This afternoon, it was God’s will that you rest. Less than five minutes after I arrived by your bedside! Our bond is such that you were waiting for me so you could say goodbye. You gave it your best. Rest in God’s arms. We shall meet on that resurrection morning.”

Her death comes just days after the family buried Erick Manyara Mochache, a grandson of the late Nyachae, who died suddenly in Narok.

Tragically, her death also came as some of her siblings were en route to Nyamira county for the burial of their aunt, Mary Nyaboke Sagini.

Friends of Nyachae’s family described Mary as a respected figure, expressing condolences to the Nyachae family during this difficult time.

Former MP Elijah Lagat dies

In other news, Elijah Kiptarbei Lagat, a former MP and celebrated marathoner, passed away on September 30 while receiving treatment in Eldoret.

Lagat, aged 59, died following a short illness, leaving behind a legacy that spans both athletics and public service.

He rose to global fame after winning the 2000 Boston Marathon and later transitioned into politics, representing the Emgwen and Chesumei constituencies in parliament.

Until his death, he served on the board of the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse Authority.
