The rally held on Saturday, October 11, marked the beginning of a united opposition campaign following a series of National Delegates Conferences, where individual parties formally endorsed their presidential candidates for the upcoming 2027 polls.
The coalition’s first major public appearance unfolded across Embu constituencies, where leaders delivered strong messages of solidarity and unveiled their plan to form a powerful alliance aimed at challenging President William Ruto and his administration.

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who led the event in Runyenjes, used the occasion to reaffirm his political ambitions.
He declared his intent to reclaim the Mt. Kenya leadership mantle from retired president Uhuru Kenyatta and voiced confidence in uniting the region behind his bid for the coalition’s presidential ticket.
What happened during Runjenjes’ rally?
However, the rally was marred by chaos shortly after the opposition leaders’ fiery speeches calling for the removal of Ruto in the upcoming polls.
Suspected goons stormed the venue, hurling stones at officials and forcing DCP representatives to flee.
How did Gachagua react after Runyenjes’ chaos?
Armed with batons, the attackers chased the DCP campaign vehicle as onlookers stood by the roadside.
Following the incident, Gachagua praised residents for standing firm against what he described as orchestrated violence by certain elected leaders.

He commended the community for rejecting intimidation and sending a clear message to those aligning with alleged authoritarian governance.
Gachagua emphasised that the people’s defiance marked a turning point, symbolising their commitment to democratic values and resistance against political betrayal.
“Runyenjes, you are a great people! Today, you have rejected planned violence by some elected leaders who have turned against you and your will. You have sent a strong message of ‘Wantam’ to the leaders who have decided to serve dictatorship espoused at the highest. It is a matter of time! God bless Runyenjes, and God bless Kenya,” he wrote.
This incident adds to a growing pattern of disruptions targeting opposition rallies, raising concerns about political tolerance and security ahead of the 2027 elections.
Will Gachagua’s team win 2027 General Election?
In other news, UDA politicians dismissed the opposition’s efforts to form a unified front, arguing that internal disorganisation would prevent them from fielding a strong presidential candidate capable of challenging Ruto.
Mwala MP Vincent Kawaya criticised attempts by opposition figures to rally support around Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, questioning the credibility of those seeking to partner with him.
He urged Kalonzo to consider aligning with a team focused on delivering tangible benefits to the people.
