He took the opportunity to pay an emotional tribute to the fallen political leader, recounting a moment that stood out for him.

Speaking during an interview with NTV, Mukhisa recalled a moment in the 90s when he hid the late ODM leader at his home when the police were pursuing him.

Mukhisa stated that Raila had just been freed from detention and that there were plans to imprison him again, prompting him to come to his ally’s rescue.

“I have known Raila very closely in different phases, first when he was released from detention. Those were the years when we were in the process of starting to form the Mageuzi predecessor, and then there were plans to re-arrest and detain him. In that period, I hid Raila in my home for sometime,” Mukhisa said.

He humourously recalled his wife driving with Raila, disguised as an old woman in the back of the car

“My wife was driving the car with Raila disguised as an old lady with glasses in the back of the car with me. We aimed to drive to the basement of the American Embassy to see if we could be admitted to be taken to the US as refugees,” he added.

Unfortunately, they were blocked from entering the American Embassy, forcing them to come up with an alternative plan.

He stated that, at that moment, Raila’s cover had already been blown, prompting Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and Siaya governor to take him to their friend in Loresho.

“We eventually helped him escape to Uganda through the lake. Then he travelled to Norway,” Kituyi added.
