The Odinga family cemetery holds deep significance, as it is the final resting place of several prominent family members, including Raila’s father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President, who passed away in 1994.

Also buried there are his mother, Mary Odhiambo Odinga (who died in 1984), his son, Fidel Odinga (who passed away in 2015), and his brother Fredrick Odima, who tragically died at the age of 21 in 1971.

As the preparations continue, Citizen TV journalist Sam Gituku has been on the ground in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, documenting the process.

In a recent update, Gituku showed the community of young men working tirelessly to dig Raila’s grave.

The initial stages of the grave preparation were carried out with the help of an excavator, but the hard, unforgiving ground required the efforts of hand tools such as pickaxes and shovels.

One of the young men working on the grave, Samwel Omondi, shared a poignant reflection on the task at hand.

“My name is Samwel Omondi. Raila was my ‘father’. We are digging our father’s grave. It’s hard, but we must do it,” he said.

Gituku, moved by the significance of the moment, joined the young men in their work.

After interviewing Omondi, he stepped into the grave himself and used a shovel to remove soil, expressing his solidarity in the preparation of Raila’s resting place.

“That’s what we are witnessing, the young people doing what is honourable for the many that they revered… Let me see if there is something I can do to make my contribution in preparation for the final resting for Raila Odinga,” Gituku and entered the grave to participate in the task.
