Ruto had on October 15, officially announced the death of Raila, who died in India where he had gone to seek treatment.
He mourned the veteran politician as his confidant and the father of Kenyan democracy. He also directed a seven-day mourning period in his honour.
Following Raila’s death, October 17 was made a public holiday with hundreds flocking to the streets of Nairobi to attend his state funeral.
However, while eulogising him, Ruto answered his critics on why he chose to give Raila a state send-off.
“Many people have been asking why Raila has been given a state funeral, yet he has never been the president. He may not have been the president, but I want to say he was the people’s president,” he said.
