Eugine Wamalwa tragically met his fate during rigorous Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) exercises.
Wamalwa collapsed and passed away at Busakala grounds in Kabuchai sub-county, Bungoma county.
Was Wamalwa rushed to hospital?
He died while taking part in the endurance drill meant to test physical fitness among recruits.
“Witnesses say the young man fell suddenly and could not be revived by medics on site. He was rushed to Chwele Sub-County Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Security officers quickly ended the day’s exercise as medics and police moved in to manage the situation. The cause of death will be determined after a post-mortem, though exhaustion and possible cardiac arrest are suspected,” George Artmoma stated.
The deceased was a bright Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) student whose life was abruptly cut short.
How old was Eugine Wamalwa when he died?
The 22-year-old’s hopes and dreams of serving his country were ended by the tragic event that left many devastated.
“Local leaders and residents have expressed sorrow, describing the late Wamalwa as a disciplined and determined youth who dreamt of serving his country in uniform.
The incident has renewed calls for improved medical screening and emergency support during recruitment exercises, which often push applicants to their physical limits,” he continued.
Wamalwa was an energetic young man and a member of Lurende FC, a community of football enthusiasts who share interests in friendly matches, local teams, and social events.
Kenyans react after Wamalwa’s death
A photo of him lying dead on a stretcher broke hearts as Kenyans poured out their tributes and consoled his family.
Dany Kipz:
“Died while chasing a dream. He showed up to serve his country but never made it home. May his sacrifice never be forgotten.”
Enoch Magara:
“Ata mimi kuna time nlienda nkakimbia kurudi ulimi ilikuwa nje, na ilikuwa saa tano mchana. Unajua nilijisikia nikiwa kwa tent saa kumi na moja jioni na nimemwagiwa maji kama 100L… toka iyo siku sijawai tena. Heri uai mtu wangu. But R.I.P. Pole kwa iyo familia.”
Kiongos Kamwanah:
“After an 8km run, over 50 push-ups, 50 sit-ups, and other tough physical tests for recruits, how do you expect one not to collapse? And yet after passing all that, they tell you you failed the medicals.”
Emily Njiks:
“R.I.P. Let’s not forget that this is the constituency where the Speaker of the National Assembly comes from. He had previously wooed voters to support the Kenya Kwanza government, promising that they would have a 30% share in KDF and police recruitment. He even claimed that lorries would ferry youths from villages to the army regardless of qualifications.”
