Earlier, before the match, the president had promised the team KSh 5 million, and an additional KSh 5 million should they win.

Had they shared the spoils, they would have taken home KSh 2.5 million.

With the clear win, KSh 10 million was guaranteed.

The rewards were announced by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya.

“As they battle it out for the crucial WAFCON qualifier against The Gambia today, H.E. President Ruto has awarded the #HarambeeStarlets KSh 5 million, promised a KSh 5 million reward to the team if they secure a home victory, and KSh 2.5 million in the event of a draw,” Mvurya said.

Ruto made a bigger promise to the team as they prepare for the return match and the last one, whose victory will propel them to the continental tournament next year.

He pledged KSh 1 million to each player should they beat Gambia again, or KSh 500,000 should they draw in the match to be played in Senegal.

“For the return leg in Senegal, the president has further pledged a reward of KSh 1 million to each player should the team win and qualify, and KSh 500,000 each if they draw and still advance,” the CS added.

Mvurya noted that such cash prizes are aimed at incentivising the sports personalities to realise their full potential in their respective lines.

“These incentives reaffirm the President’s steadfast vision to inspire, reward, and commercialise Kenyan sporting talent, turning passion into opportunity and positioning Kenya as a formidable force in African football and global sports,” he said.
