A furniture maker in Vihiga County is counting heavy losses after a fire gutted his workshop on Saturday, destroying machines, finished furniture, and raw materials worth an estimated KSh 2 million.

Geoffrey M. Enonda, the proprietor of GG Home of Furnitures, said the inferno broke out due to a fault caused by ongoing welding works at the site.
Why Enonda couldn’t save workshop
He told TUKO.co.ke that saving the workshop was impossible because there was no fire extinguisher on hand, allowing the flames to spread rapidly through the premises.
He noted that the development was a big setback, especially now when the journey of business had just started smiling at him.
Enonda has been in the furniture business since 2021 and had only moved to the new site six months ago in hopes of expanding operations.
The fire, however, reduced his hard work and investment to ashes, wiping out all machines, tools, and furniture meant for delivery to customers.
Was Enonda’s furniture shop insured?
What has left many with question marks is the fact that the Vihiga County Fire Department which is less than 20 minutes away, did not arrive in time.
Adding to the heartbreak, Enonda revealed that he had already begun the process of securing insurance coverage for the business just days before the tragedy struck.
Despite the loss, he remains hopeful that with community support and resilience, he can rebuild GG Home of Furnitures from the ground up.
“I’m not giving up,” he said. “I’ve come too far to stop now,” he said sorrowfully, standing next to the charred remains of what had been his thriving workshop.
