Evans Ouma, who was Raila’s official photographer between 2015 and 2018, has shared touching memories of his time with the former prime minister.

How did Raila Odinga’s ex-photographer remember him?

In an interview with Citizen TV, the photographer described his departed ex-boss as humble and had a touch with the ordinary citizen.

Ouma said his focus was on capturing Raila’s moments with the people.

“He was a man of the people. Whenever I went for campaigns with him, I always tried to capture his connection with the crowd, how his presence made people feel,” Ouma said.

Why were Raila’s acts of kindness never captured?

Ouma also revealed that the departed former prime minister never allowed him to take photos when he was offering help.

“Whenever he gave someone money or support, he never wanted pictures taken. He didn’t do it for show; he did it from the heart,” he said.

The youthful photographer said the 2017 general election campaigns were some of the most intense moments of his career.

“That was one of the most electric campaigns I have ever covered. Photographing Jakom as a presidential candidate was a dream,” he recalled.

Raila’s presidential photo shoot

He recalled a presidential photo shoot at Raila’s Capitol Hill. The shoot gave birth to the photo, which was to be used as his official image in case he became the president after the 2017 election.

“We were prepared. That was supposed to be the official image,” he said.

Additionally, Ouma recalled one of the most historic moments after the Supreme Court nullified the 2017 presidential election results. Raila had never seemed happier, according to him.

“I had never seen him that happy. Jakom was fist-pumping, laughing, and hugging everyone, saying democracy has finally won,” Ouma said.
