On Sunday, October 26, the weatherman issued a statement on the low-pressure system “CHENGE” (Residual Depression) currently over the southwest Indian Ocean.
How will Chenge affect weather conditions at the coast
According to Kenya Met, the Chenge currently located about 500 km north of Madagascar will weaken as it moves across the northern Mozambique Channel.
The system’s proximity to the coast may influence local weather conditions over southern coastal Kenya.
“CHENGE, located about 500 km north of Madagascar, continues to weaken as it moves west across the northern Mozambique Channel. Despite its weakening, the system’s proximity to the coast may influence local weather conditions over southern coastal Kenya and Tanzania early in the week,” Kenya Met said.
The weatherman said heavy rainfall is expected in several parts of the country with strong winds exceeding 25 knots along the Indian Ocean Coast counties of Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu Counties.
“Heavy rainfall is expected over several parts of the country, with strong winds exceeding 25 knots possible along the south coast on Monday and Tuesday as the system dissipates.
The Kenya Met has advised residents in the coastal regions and those engaged in marine activities to exercise caution.
“Residents, particularly in coastal regions and those engaged in marine activities, are urged to exercise caution, stay informed through official KMD updates, and take necessary preparedness measures,” they stated.

Why is a 7-day weather forecast important?
As reported, the seven-day weather forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department offers a comprehensive outlook on anticipated weather conditions across various regions for the upcoming week.
This tool offers detailed weather forecasts, including rainfall and temperature changes, to support informed decision-making in agriculture, disaster management, and daily activities.
Measures to take during heavy rainfall
As reported earlier, the department issued an advisory urging citizens to be alert for potential floods and take necessary precautions.
Additionally, they advised residents in the affected areas to avoid standing in moving water, sheltering under trees, and standing near grilled windows to minimise the risk of lightning strikes.
Residents in the affected areas were also urged to avoid driving through moving water, as it could endanger their lives.
How Nairobi floods killed 3 people
In other news, overnight rains wreaked havoc in various parts of Nairobi, leading to the death of a mother and her two children.
The three victims—a mother and her two children—were killed in the Mathare 4A informal settlement when a massive boulder, dislodged by the rains, crashed onto their home.
The tragic incident occurred after a nearby river overflowed, causing the soil structure to weaken, which led to the collapse of the boulder onto the family’s house.
