Being in the same house and compound without stepping out for over four years is the life that 27-year-old Mercy Chete has embraced in Saudi Arabia.

The young woman has been working in a foreign nation as a househelp since 2021, and she admits that for those four years, the language barrier, being indoors all the time and being homesick were some of the major challenges she has faced.
Mercy, who hails from Webuye, Bungoma County, told TUKO.co.ke that she is lucky that her bosses don’t mistreat her and pay her better than what she would earn in Kenya.
Nonetheless, she has spent the last four years staring at the same walls in her boss’s home, as she is not allowed to leave the compound.
It is due to this monotonous lifestyle that Mercy decided to turn to her creative side, and now, four years down the line, the househelp has some self-published books online under her belt.
She revealed that after finishing her house chores, she spends hours brainstorming, writing and researching.
“We are not allowed to go outside. Before, I could write, but I wasn’t able to finish an entire story. But here, because I live alone and have access to the internet, I have a creative mind. That’s how I managed to write five books. Four are fictional stories and one is a poetry book,” Mercy told TUKO.co.ke
Did Mercy Complete High School?
Mercy said she completed her secondary education and scored a D+ in KCSE, but couldn’t proceed to higher education due to a lack of finances.
She indicated that she was good at English, hence he passion for filling blank pages with her thoughts and ideas in the Queen’s language,
The househelp revealed she aspires to go back to school, to study English or Journalism, to sharpen her skills in creative writing.
“If I get an opportunity to further my education, I would study English Literature or Journalism and Mass Communication. None of my books has been published, but they are on reading apps online. If I get help in publishing the books, I will appreciate it,” she added.
Mercy believes that her story of getting a D+ in KCSE and rising above all challenges to author books should inspire young people who feel that scoring a D is the end of life.
