“In a gesture of continental solidarity and personal friendship, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former President of the Republic of Ghana and a distinguished African statesman, will on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, visit Bondo, Siaya County, to pay his respects at the resting place of the late Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister and Pan-African icon,” the statement read.

This visit renews the bond between Ghana and Kenya, nations whose founding fathers, Kwame Nkrumah and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, championed Africa’s freedom and unity.

Why is Akufo-Addo’s visit to Bondo important?

Akufo-Addo’s journey to Bondo follows his participation in the Democracy Union of Africa (DUA) and International Democracy Union (IDU) conference in Nairobi, where he delivered a keynote address on democratic resilience and Africa’s economic independence.

According to the brief, Akufo-Addo’s trip to Bondo is a deeply personal mission aimed at honouring the memory of a friend, comrade, and fellow believer in the promise of African democracy, the former prime minister.

Beyond politics, this visit to Siaya county bears a unique human and familial significance, given that Raila’s sister is married to a Ghanaian national.

“Hon. Ruth Odinga, who is the Kisumu County MP and the late Raila Odinga’s sister, is married to Nana Busia, a Ghanaian national. This, therefore, is a bond that transcends borders and underscores the cultural and personal ties uniting the Odinga and Busia families with Ghana,” the brief read.

Following the burial, Uhuru Kenyatta stayed to comfort the family. He revisited the former prime minister’s gravesite on Monday, October 20, accompanied by the family, to further honour the deceased leader.
