While expressing condolences for the six members of a family who tragically lost their lives in a horrific road accident in Gatanga, Muriu shared a condolence poster online.

What did Edward Muriu’s condolence poster look like?

The poster was accompanied by a brief message of consolation for the grieving family.

His message:

“Our hearts are heavy with grief following the tragic accident along Chomo-Kahunyo Road on 25/10/2025, which claimed the lives of six family members and left eight others injured. To lose so many loved ones at once is a pain that words cannot fully express.

The entire Gatanga community stands in deep sorrow and solidarity with the bereaved family, friends, and neighbours of Gatunguru Village, Kariara Ward. May God’s comforting hand bring peace to the grieving hearts and swift healing to those nursing injuries. May the souls of our departed brothers and sisters rest in eternal peace.”

Why did Edward Muriu face backlash?

However, his poster faced immediate backlash from Kenyans, as it featured his own smiling photograph alongside the message. Many questioned the relevance of his smiling image in the post.

Muriuki called the lawmaker and asked if he was okay.

“The kind of narcissism in Kenyan politics needs to be studied. Because why is your smiling mug in a condolence message? Like, are you okay?’ the journalist posed.

Many also joined the conversation and slammed the politician for taking advantage of the situation to plaster his image.

@dissidentkenyan

“Exactly! For a second before I read the content, I thought he was the deceased!”

@Morradrummer:

“He shouldn’t be smiling, though I probably think it’s the guy who designed the poster who used a pic of the MP smiling and plastered it onto the condolence one, but either way, they should have rectified it before posting once they saw the poster.”

@Tyen_Musa

“Why are you in the poster? Why is there a poster instead of a message to the family?”

@njengapeter160:

“Politicians are shameless. They see an opportunity to campaign in every event, however tragic the event may be.”
