When did Achieng’s father die?

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, her aunt Brenda Mbalilwa recounted the fateful day the accident occurred.

“It was on Thursday, October 2, when Onyango, Achieng’s father, was taking her to school in the morning. They live in Njoro, and Achieng’ goes to school at Mama Ngina Primary School. Since he was a boda boda operator, he always took her to school in the morning before beginning his hustle.

As they were on their way, they were hit by a Lexus. The impact was so bad that, unfortunately, Achieng’s father lost his life on the spot. He had been struck by a metallic umbrella stick that pierced through his neck. His leg was also broken,” she recounted.

Achieng’ was not spared either; she survived with a broken leg, hand, and severely bruised chest.

They were rushed to the hospital, while her father’s body was taken to the morgue, and the family was called.

Kenyans mourn as Grade 9 Narok girl heading to school to sit KJSEA exam is killed: “Who did this?”

“I went to the morgue and confirmed the body and identity of my in-law. Then I went to check on Achieng’, whom the doctors were trying to save. She had three deep wounds following the impact. She had also lost a lot of blood, but the hospital managed to stabilise her after a transfusion.

The following day, she was transferred to another hospital where we were assigned a new doctor. The first doctor had told us that Achieng’ seemed to have a spinal injury and needed corrective surgery immediately. For some reason, this never happened due to miscommunication between the two doctors,” she said.

Brenda claimed the family had issues with the specialist doctor because of his inconsistent support during Achieng’s medical journey.

Achieng’s doctor responds after 13 days

Achieng’s condition worsened due to blood loss, and she could hardly sleep.

“There was a time she barely slept for almost two weeks. It was like she was in shock. Her eyes were always open until I told a nurse to give her medicine so she could sleep. On the other side, we were struggling to reach the doctor who had been assigned to us.

We later took Achieng’ to another hospital for an MRI scan and got the results. I tried to call the doctor, but he was not answering. I sent him the images on WhatsApp, but it took him 13 days to respond. When he finally did, he said Achieng’s situation was not bad,” Brenda narrated.

Desperate, Brenda took the initiative to post Achieng’s story on TikTok, where she received overwhelming support from online users.

Will Achieng’ ever walk again?

Some visited them in the hospital, while others gave financial help to support Achieng’, who was helpless.

“We went to see another specialist who said Achieng’ needed corrective surgery, but by then it was too late, as such operations must be done within 24 hours after the injury. He advised that Achieng’ be taken to a rehabilitation centre and be counselled to prepare for a life without walking again.

We later sought another opinion and were given hope that Achieng’ could walk again, but only with the help of crutches. However, it would take a lot of effort to make that happen,” Brenda continued.

As they continue to raise money for Achieng’s treatment, the Grade 9 pupil has been forced to write her Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) exams from the hospital.

Brenda’s appeal to Kenyans

Brenda noted that Achieng’s headteacher ensured arrangements were made for her to sit the exams at the medical facility as she recuperates.

“We are now appealing to anyone who can help us raise funds for Achieng’s treatment. She also needs a counsellor because, as of now, she does not know that her father is dead, and the whole situation is overwhelming for her. Her mother has six other children who are in school.

She is stressed because her breadwinner is gone. She also needs guidance and counselling because it is not easy. Her husband’s body is still in the morgue as she lacks the money to bury him. We are pleading for any help to ease this burden on our shoulders,” she cried.

Financial contributions towards Achieng’s medical appeal can be sent to her aunt at +254 729 892681.
