Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández and Monsignor Armando Matteo signed Mater Populi Fidelis (The Mother of the Faithful People), a document approved by Pope Leo XIV on October 7 and published on November 4, 2025.
According to Vatican News, the document aims to clarify which Marian titles are appropriate and which may cause confusion among the faithful.

Should Catholics refer to Mary as co-redeemer and mediator?
The document affirms Mary’s role as the ‘Mother of Believers’ and ‘Spiritual Mother,’ titles that highlight her connection to Christ and the Church.
However, it strongly discourages the use of the title ‘co-redemptrix,’ stating that it risks overshadowing Christ’s unique role in salvation.
While some popes have used the term in the past, the note explains that it lacks clear biblical and theological grounding and often requires lengthy explanations to avoid misunderstanding.
The title ‘mediatrix’ is also addressed. The note emphasises that Jesus Christ is the sole mediator between God and humanity.
While Mary’s role in the Incarnation is acknowledged, the term ‘mediatrix’ is only acceptable when used in a way that supports and glorifies Christ’s mediation—not replaces or competes with it.
“The title of co-redemptrix is deemed inappropriate and problematic. The title of mediatrix is considered unacceptable when it takes on a meaning that excludes Jesus Christ,” the document read.
What does Mater Populi Fidelis say about other Marian titles?
The document also discusses titles like ‘Mother of Grace’ and ‘Mediatrix of All Graces.’
These may be used cautiously and only in very specific theological contexts.
The note warns against broad or exaggerated interpretations that could mislead believers into thinking Mary dispenses grace independently of Christ.
“For this reason, even if some Marian titles admit of an orthodox interpretation through correct exegesis, Mater populi fidelis says it is preferable to avoid them,” it added.
Cardinal Fernández, in presenting the note, expressed concern over groups and publications, especially on social media, that promote unofficial doctrines and stir confusion.
He reiterated that all Marian devotion must point back to Christ and uphold the harmony of Catholic teaching.
The note further stressed that even though Mary holds a special place in salvation history, her role must always be understood in light of Christ’s central and unique mission.
“One must avoid titles and expressions that present Mary as a kind of ‘lightning rod’ before the Lord’s justice, as if she were a necessary alternative to the insufficiency of God’s mercy,” the document emphasised.

Did Pope Leo XIV canonise former Satanic priest?
Meanwhile, weeks ago, Pope Leo XIV canonised St. Bartolo Longo, a former lawyer who once strayed into occult practices despite being raised in a devout Catholic family.
After a dramatic spiritual conversion, Longo renounced his past and became a committed lay apostle, dedicating his life to promoting the Rosary and founding the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii.
Alongside Longo, six other faithful individuals, including lay people, were also canonised in recognition of their generous contributions to the church.
