Tuberculosis of the spine had robbed him of mobility in 2004, leaving him dependent, vulnerable, and battling the many complications that come with long-term immobility.
Day Ibrahim was taken to KNH
But this year, in a quiet ward at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Ibrahim’s story took a breathtaking turn.
A post on Facebook indicated that by the time he was referred to KNH in July 2025, Ibrahim was fighting for his life.
Severe pressure sores, a raging urinary tract infection, failing kidneys and overwhelming fatigue had pushed his body to the brink.
His condition worsened so quickly that he slipped into a three-day coma, leaving his family and the medical team terrified that they were running out of time.
How KNH doctors saved Ibrahim’s life
But the team at KNH refused to give up. They launched an aggressive and coordinated fight to pull him back.
After six intensive dialysis sessions, something extraordinary happened, Ibrahim woke up, but regaining consciousness was just the first victory.
On August 4, he underwent a delicate two-hour surgery to address a scrotal infection. Then came the slow, daily work of rebuilding a life that had been interrupted for 20 long years.
A devoted team of wound care nurses, physiotherapists, counsellors, and nutritionists rallied around him for three months, determined to not only heal his wounds but restore his strength, confidence, and hope.

Magical moment Ibrahim stood up
Their effort paid off in ways that stunned even seasoned clinicians. Today, Ibrahim can sit up unassisted, manoeuvre independently in a wheelchair, and, after two decades, stand on his own two feet.
Every day he practices walking, inching closer to the moment he will take his first steps unaided.
“I have gotten a positive overview about life,” Ibrahim says, his voice full of renewed purpose. “I want to go back to my community and continue with my cobbler business.”
Much of that transformation, he insists, belongs to the compassionate KNH team that refused to let his story end in despair and treated him not just as a patient, but as a life worth rebuilding.
At Kenyatta National Hospital, Ibrahim’s recovery is more than a medical milestone, it is a testament to the hospital’s commitment to restoring dignity and hope.
And for the first time in 20 years, Ibrahim is determined to walk back into the world, this time, on his own.
