Nairobi – Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has been shocked after witnessing firsthand dangerous and unhygienic practices.

In a statement on Wednesday, November 12, Mosiria narrated how, during his impromptu inspection, he found women in Mukuru Kwa Ruben washing used carrier bags using sewage water for resale.

“It is deeply disturbing and unfortunate that some women in Mukuru Kwa Ruben have resorted to washing used carrier bags with sewage water for resale. Earlier today, during an impromptu inspection, I was shocked to witness this act firsthand a dangerous and unhygienic practice that puts both city residents and the women themselves at serious health risk,” Mosiria said.

The chief officer established that the contaminated bags often find their way into major markets such as Muthurwa, Gikomba, Toi, Marikiti and Wakulima.
He regretted that some innocent consumers unknowingly buy and eat food packed in contaminated materials, exposing them to life-threatening diseases.
“We have established that these contaminated bags often find their way into major markets across Nairobi, including Muthurwa, Gikomba, Toi, Marikiti, Wakulima, and Burma markets, as well as to various shops within the city. This means that innocent consumers are unknowingly buying and eating food packed in contaminated materials, exposing them to life-threatening diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and other infections,” he stated.
What action did Geoffrey Mosiria take?
Mosiria noted that he stopped the operations immediately but offered to help the women involved in the practice to find a safer and sustainable alternative.
“I have stopped their operations immediately and sought to find them a safer and sustainable alternative. Many of these women are vulnerable and driven by poverty, but instead of criminalising them, we shall work to educate, empower, and support them and help them access legitimate and clean income opportunities, including a safe recycling program for used carrier bags.
He further warned any other person who may be engaging in similar dangerous and illegal practices that legal action will be taken against them.

“We will not allow anyone to compromise the health and safety of Nairobi residents. Any person found handling or distributing contaminated packaging materials will face the full force of the law. Public health and safety are not negotiable. Together, we must protect our people, our markets, and our city from such unacceptable practices,” Mosiria stated firmly.
Did the Dandora man sell urine to residents?
Meanwhile, in Dandora, residents were shocked after a man was caught selling bottled urine disguised as fruit juice.
A suspect used recycled Minute Maid bottles filled with yellow liquid resembling soda. Locals, noticing a suspicious odour, warned others, claiming the man was a repeat offender.
They expressed concern for children playing nearby, as the fake juice appeared highly concentrated.
