Described as a game-changer due to features such as solar panels and fewer seats, centred on passenger comfort and a party experience, Mood was recently spotted in trouble.
The matatu is often hired for out-of-town excursions, earning the investor, nicknamed GK, good money.
What happened to Mood Matatu in Mombasa?
The driver, Lenny, projected that the investment would pay off in two years.
“Some days, the vehicle earns KSh 80,000, and when hired for trips to places such as Nakuru, I get KSh 100,000. I give the owner KSh 80,000, and the rest goes to the crew.”
Lenny added that the matatu could also be rented for up to four days for long-distance trips, such as to Mombasa or Eldoret.
“On weekends, it’s often out of Nairobi, meaning good profits,” he noted.
However, the out-of-town trips have proven to be quite a thorn in the side for the PSV.
A recent video, captured in Mombasa county, showed Mood stuck at the ferry crossing.
The matatu was disembarking from the ferry, but the overhang prevented it from clearing the ramp onto the road.
The driver tried turning the wheel to approach the ramp from an angle, but it didn’t work.
Bystanders filmed the vehicle, while others commented on the ownership.
They joked that the driver should just rip the front end off by forcefully driving over the ramp, as the matatu belongs to the first son.
“Wewe vunja hiyo, ni mali ya serikali (just break it, that is government property),” one was heard saying.
They said that repairing the PSV would be no issue for George.
