The turbulence during the trip seemed to echo her own uncertainty, but nothing could have prepared the mother of four for the nightmare that awaited her in Macau.
Flight that changed Fletcher Luzilili’s life
In a chilling interview on Shared Moments With Justus, she took a trip down memory lane to a period she wishes to forget forever.
She had struggled to find her way around shortly after landing in Macau due to a language barrier, but she finally managed to get transport to her hotel room.
Just as the mother of four sat down to rest from the exhaustion and jetlag, a sudden knock shattered the quiet.
“I peeped through the peephole and saw them waving police badges, so I opened the door,” she recalled.
Fletcher Luzilili told about “her crime”
The moment the latch clicked, officers stormed inside, rifling through her luggage as she struggled to make sense of what was unfolding.
Within minutes, she found herself ordered into the bathroom and told to undress.
The bewildered traveller was whisked away to another location, interrogated for hours, and finally taken to an underground cell. Only then did the gravity of her situation sink in: she was under arrest.
The following morning, she was ushered into a room lined with cameras, her entry broadcast live.
“I learnt later on that I was being accused of bringing drugs into Macau and exchanging the bag with an Indonesian dealer,” she said.

How long was Fletcher Luzilili’s sentence?
The accusation stunned her. She maintained her innocence, but the machinery of justice had already moved against her.
Escorted from court to a remand centre, she came to realise that the facility would be her home for many years.
After seven long months awaiting judgement while yearning for freedom, the verdict came: 11 years in prison.
“My life flashed across my eyes and all I could see were my four kids and my father, because Mum had already passed on,” Fletcher said.
Fletcher Luzilili struggled to accept
The harsh reality of incarceration took years to settle. After seven years, in 2021, she finally got her mind to accept that she was in prison.
Eight and a half years into her sentence, her case was finally reopened. In a rare turn of events, she was acquitted during her retrial, having already served the bulk of the original sentence.
She walked out of prison a free woman, though the world she returned to had transformed in her absence.
Fletcher came home to Kenya on 19 August 2022. She arrived with over KSh 20,000 in old currency, only to discover the country had changed its banknotes while she was away.
Fletcher Luzilili’s dad died
Reintegrating was bittersweet: she was free, yet still piecing together a life interrupted. Her children had grown without her being around to witness their milestones.
Shortly after her release, her father, who had promised to take care of her children until she returned, died.
Today, she believes the ordeal stemmed from mistaken identity. According to her, the officers confused her for someone else.
Though the scars of the experience remain, Fletcher continues to rebuild, driven by the hope that no other innocent traveller will endure what she did.
