The opposition, led by former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, has been consistent in downplaying the chances of Ruto being re-elected.
Can President Ruto secure re-election in 2027?
During an interview on Hot 96 FM on Monday, December 8, Khalwale said he does not see why President Ruto will fail to be re-elected in the 2027 presidential race.
According to the vocal Kakamega senator, Kenya has a history of presidents serving for a second term in office.
However, Khalwale said that Ruto can be an exception and lose his reelection bid if he plays his politics badly ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The country has a history of all our presidents getting a second term. I don’t see why William Ruto should be an exception. The only way he can be an exception is if his politics are done badly. You can be winning, and then you spoil,” Khalwale said.
Is the Kakamega senator concerned about 2027?
The Kakamega senator also clarified his previous warning to the Kenya Kwanza Alliance leader that he would face a difficult 2027 election.
“It hasn’t reached that point. If I wanted to say that things are difficult, I would have said it. I said that things would get tough, and that was not the first time I said it. I talked about it during the burial of Malulu Injendi when I said, ‘Your excellency, the more development you do, the easier you make it for me to look for votes for you for re-election,’”, the Kakamega said.

The UDA senator emphasised that President Ruto remains his preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
“Up to now, President William Ruto has not failed to be my candidate of choice,” Khalwale added.
Did Boni Khalwale criticise Ruto’s leadership?
Khalwale’s positive remarks about Ruto come despite him aligning with the opposition leaders in the recent by-elections.
In the Malava parliamentary seat by-elections, Khalwale defied his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and backed Seth Panyako of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K).
During the campaigns, the Kakamega senator asked Kenyans to reject the Kenya Kwanza Alliance administration in the 2027 poll.
On several occasions, the senator has been captured with Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya criticising Ruto’s leadership.
After the mini-polls, Khalwale was ejected from his Senate Majority Whip position by the Kenya Kwanza Alliance team.
