The Metro Police Department later confirmed that the shooting occurred at the intersection of Von Wielligh Street and Commissioner Street, directly opposite the Carlton Centre in Joburg’s CBD.
Police believe DJ Warras was shot during a property inspection. He had been actively involved in efforts to reclaim hijacked buildings.
Hijacked buildings are properties that have been illegally occupied without the consent of their owners, a cause he was publicly associated with.
Initial reports indicate that individuals linked to a hijacked building may have been responsible for the shooting.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), DJ Warras had just parked his vehicle when he was approached by three unknown men. The suspects opened fire on him before fleeing the scene on foot.
Further reports by South Africa’s The Star suggest that one of the gunmen, described as a short man with dreadlocks, fired the fatal shots.
CCTV footage reportedly captured the suspect approaching DJ Warras as he exited the building shortly after noon and shooting him before attempting to escape. Police said that spent cartridges were later recovered at the scene.
Investigations into the motive behind the killing are ongoing, with authorities treating the case as a targeted attack potentially linked to disputes surrounding hijacked properties.
May DJ Warras rest in peace.
