Nairobi – Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, held a catch-up meeting with young environmentalist Truphena Muthoni, days after she broke the 72-hour tree-hugging world record.

On Tuesday, December 16, Mosiria shared a video on his social media page of him enjoying some light moments with Muthoni in Nairobi.
Why did Mosiria hug Truphena Muthoni?
In the video, Mosiria is captured hugging the young environmentalist while saying his hug will only last for 72 seconds.
“Mine I am giving her a hug of 72 seconds so that she can go and plant 72 million trees,” Mosiria joked as Truphena burst into laughter.
Mosiria said their meeting reminded him of his tenure as the environment chief officer, which he said was marked by pain and frustrations.
“Meeting her took me back to my own time serving in the environment sector, a period marked by pain and frustration. I remember running up and down, trying to stop developers who were cutting down trees indiscriminately, even trees that posed no threat to their developments, simply so that the beauty of their buildings could be fully exposed,” Mosiria recalled.
What message did Mosiria share with Kenyans?
The young environmentalist informed Mosiria that her decision to hug the tree for 72 hours was a call to protect the environment and stop the unnecessary destruction of trees.
“Truphena shared that her action was a message to the public: a call to protect our environment and to stop the unnecessary destruction of trees. Her patience and resilience during those 72 hours reminded me of an important truth: that we must not only plant trees, but also patiently protect and nurture them to maturity,” he said.
The customer service chief officer urged Kenyans to support Truphena’s bold effort by protecting and growing more trees for future generations.
“Her courage also reminded me that a clean and healthy environment gives us the patience and strength to keep going and to survive, regardless of the state of the economy. This is a call to all of us: let us conserve, protect, and grow our trees for our present and for future generations,” the chief officer said.

Earlier, President William Ruto and his deputy, Kithure Kindiki, hosted Truphena at State House, Nairobi.
In recognition of Truphena’s effort, the head of state appointed her as ambassador of the 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign.
The president further disclosed that the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Tourism Board will give Truphena and her team a fully sponsored holiday trip.
Ruto also announced that the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Forestry will sponsor Truphena’s trip to Brazil to broaden her exposure to global conservation initiatives.
