Her family, led by her mother Joyce Wairimu Mbugua, petitioned the DPP for an inquest, alleging possible foul play.
Betty’s family said they were devastated by her sudden death, noting that she had no known medical conditions before her passing.
Why did Betty Bayo’s family petition the DPP?
They raised concerns that her death may not have been natural and questioned the circumstances surrounding it. According to the family, they were denied access to the post-mortem and were not given her medical records or details of any treatment she had received.

They further alleged that the burial was rushed, fuelling suspicion. The family has now called for an independent probe to establish the truth.
On Thursday, December 18, the ODPP released a statement regarding the request.
The ODPP noted that it received a formal complaint on Tuesday, December 9.
What did the DPP say about Betty Bayo’s death?
“The complaint raises concerns and suspicions regarding the circumstances surrounding her death, noting, among other issues, that the deceased had no known underlying health condition and that the family has allegedly been denied access to the post-mortem report.”
The DPP then instructed the DCI to conduct thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death and to submit the subsequent file for review and appropriate action.
“The ODPP reaffirms its commitment to executing its mandate independently, fairly, and in strict accordance with the Constitution and the laws of Kenya,” the statement concluded.
