A woman in Nairobi has expressed her frustration after ten years of joblessness, despite having the necessary credentials.

Jeanette Kamene told TUKO.co.ke that she graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 2015, earning a second class honours, upper division.
She hoped to secure a job within a few months or years of graduation, but a decade later, she is still searching.

“I have had the opportunity to work in some organisations, but mostly on one-month contracts, sometimes three months. As you can tell, they are not sustainable,” she said.
Kamene noted that job searching had become so difficult that sometimes even her applications do not go through. She resorted to menial jobs, such as selling eggs and second-hand clothes, but the businesses did not thrive.
In 2021, Kamene was fortunate to secure an internship with the Public Service Commission. However, after the one-year period ended, she was forced to return home jobless once again, facing the same frustrations.

“Public Service Commission does not absorb interns into the various offices they send them to for internships. After one year, you just return to serious job hunting. It’s like going back to square one, only with a bit of one-year-long work experience,” she explained.
The mother of three said she had applied for numerous jobs across different companies and organisations but has yet to be shortlisted or employed.
Kamene admitted that she felt like giving up, as a decade of waiting had worn her down.
She also voiced frustration over being contacted by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), which asked her to begin repaying her student loan.
“How do I start paying the loan if I have yet to get a job?” she asked. “The longest contract I’ve had was the internship. The rest are usually three months or sometimes even just one month. It’s really frustrating,” she shared.
Kamene called on potential employers, asking for any job opportunities while assuring them that she is hardworking and eager to learn.
“It doesn’t necessarily have to be related to what I studied in school. If it’s not medicine, engineering, or law, there are other jobs I can learn on the job,” she said.
