A mother from Nairobi county is among the overjoyed parents after her son surprised the family with his impressive performance.
A Nairobi teacher who counselled the Form Four candidate shared the heartwarming news on her Facebook page, giving a brief background of the boy.
“This boy was expelled from a certain school. The mother had given up. Her friend, who happens to be my close friend, referred him to me. I met the boy. We sat. We talked. Luckily, the school was lenient enough to allow him to sit for his KCSE. See the feedback! I’m told that he’s so disciplined nowadays that the mother sometimes fails to understand what really transpired. I know how to handle even the most big-headed. Having learnt child psychology, I believe no child chooses to be naughty, and no behaviour is untamable,” Jane Mugo shared.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Mugo detailed her journey with the young man who studied at Machakos Boys High School.

She expressed excitement over his results and explained that she got to know him through a friend who reached out to her.
“My friend reached out to me, saying her friend’s son had initially been suspended. Allegations were that he and other boys were found in possession of a phone, and it was suspected they were using it for a sinister purpose. It was alleged that a watchman spotted them, confiscated the phone, and that the boys later assaulted him. Although it happened at night, the watchman identified them, but they denied the claims. He, together with three others, was suspended while awaiting the disciplinary committee’s verdict.
Unfortunately, they were expelled but advised to sit for the national exam. Though he vehemently denied the allegations, I could tell he was guilty. However, I had to act as a mentor, exposing him to case studies, life skills, and offering counselling services. I advised the mother to support him emotionally because the young man already looked depressed. I think he never imagined he would be out of school forever,” she shared.

Should children be given second chances?
Her advice worked, as the young man’s mother would occasionally call to thank her after noticing positive changes in her son.
Mugo continued encouraging her to be supportive and to reassure him that everything would be alright.
“It’s an eye-opener for schools and parents that sometimes it’s good to give a child a second chance. He shared with me some challenges too, that his mother is a single mum and he sees her struggling. Sometimes young people seek solace to manage emotional instability through petty crimes. We need to identify the root cause and guide them from that perspective.
Can you imagine if the boy had been expelled and the mum ignored him? What would have happened?” she posed.
