The young man Edwin Mogaka was introduced to Osiany by the politcian’s friend Charles Mogaka, and the latter said the young man had sat for his Kenyan Junior Secondary Education Assessment at Itibo ELCK Comprehensive School in Kisii county and performed well, but he came from a humble background, which meant joining Kanga High School would be difficult.

“In a desperate attempt to defy that possibility, one morning he walked from their Itibo home to Kanga High School and sought the principal, asking to be given a chance, even when he barely knew how he’d get the basic needs, let alone pay fees,” said Osiany.
“He had a letter from his former Headteacher Mr Agalo, who had drafted a scholarship request to the Chief Principal of Kanga High School Dr Reuben Kodiango, asking that if they had such an arrangement, they should consider the young man for a slot. In that letter, the Principal of Itibo ELCK Comprehensive School described the young man as ‘Vulnerable but very bright’ and that struck right at the chords of my soul,” he added.

What was Kanga High School’s response?
Although Kodiango knew and felt the need, he was limited as the school doesn’t run a scholarship program. Since Charles was passing Kanga High School to say hallo the principal got hold of the boy and requested him to take help the boy from Kisii.
“Charles in turn, put him in the car and drove straight my home and and his ask was simply, waziri, are you able to assist this young man? He is bright.”

“I engaged the boy and instantly could pick that he was very bright indeed. I asked where his parents were, and he said his mum was home, but he didn’t know about his dad’s whereabouts. That cut me. He went on to explain that the mum didn’t have a job and also couldn’t bring him to school because they have a special needs sibling who also needed round the clock assistance,” he added.
After learning of the sad situation Mogaka left behind, Osinay took the phone and reached out to a friend to see if KCB Foundation could assist, but they had closed the applications.
“We spoke with Syombua Osiany about him and she said the same thing that had rung in my head and heart from the moment I encountered the boy: this child will turn out great. There’s something about him that reads greatness. You can’t touch it, you can’t put a pulse to it. But it’s there,” he said.

How did Osiany help Mogaka
Although the Osianys’ funds were depleted from helping other students spread across the country, they thought it wouldn’t hurt to stretch one more for the young man, but they were truly stretched.
“The Lord made a way; we cleared his fee, and I asked the principal to allow him in school, give him all the things required that were to be purchased in school and send me the bill for his uniforms et al. On the other hand, Charles worked hard to get the basic shopping that the boy needed,” he said.
