Kenya Met Predicts Sunny Conditions in Most Parts, Rainfall in Select Counties Over Next 5 Days

Nairobi – The Kenya Meteorological Department has released the five-day weather forecast covering January 31 to February 4.

In a notice on its website, the weatherman predicted that most parts of the country will experience sunny and dry conditions.

During the same period, counties in the highland west of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin are likely to experience moderate rainfall.

“Most parts of the country are expected to be sunny and dry. However, light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur in a few areas in the highlands west of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin,” Kenya Met said on Saturday, January 31.

Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Rift Valley

Counties in these regions are Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

The weatherman predicted that these counties will receive moderate rainfall on Sunday, February 1, and Monday, February 2.

On February 3 and 4, the counties will experience sunny and dry conditions with maximum temperatures expected to hover around 33°C, with minimum temperatures dipping to 8°C, particularly in the early mornings.

The northwestern region

In Turkana and Samburu counties, Kenya Met projected that there will be sunny intervals with maximum temperatures projected to be 38°C and minimum temperatures at 8°C.

The highlands east of the Rift Valley

According to the weatherman, the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi will have sunny and dry conditions over the next five days.

Kenya Met has projected that the maximum daytime temperatures will be 33°C, while the minimum temperatures will be 5°C.

Northeastern region

The counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo have been projected to remain sunny and dry, with maximum temperatures predicted to be 37°C and minimum temperatures of 17°C.

The southeastern lowland

The counties of Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and Kitui, as well as inland parts of Tana River county will have sunny intervals both in the morning and afternoon.

The maximum temperatures in these counties are expected to hover around 35°C, with minimum temperatures dipping to 15°C, particularly in the early mornings.

The coastal region

The counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as coastal parts of Tana River County, will have sunny intervals, with maximum temperatures projected to be 34°C and minimum temperatures projected to be 22°C.

In related news, the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) issued its forecast for the March–May (MAM) 2026 long rains, indicating that Kenya is likely to experience wetter-than-usual conditions.

The outlook, released on January 27 following the 72nd Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 72) in Nairobi, projected a 45% chance of above-average rainfall across central and western Kenya, as well as parts of Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Burundi, South Sudan, Djibouti, and northern Somalia.

ICPAC also reported a 40% probability of near-normal rainfall in northeastern and southwestern Kenya, coastal Tanzania, much of Somalia, and select areas of South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Uganda.
