On Friday, February 20, the former DP turned his heated exchange with journalists into a dramatic political spectacle after playing an audio recording he claimed captured Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi insulting him.
How did Gachagua address his past allegations?
Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), turned the spotlight on what he described as the conduct of leaders around President William Ruto.
The episode unfolded during his engagement with journalists drawn from the Rift Valley, where reporters pressed him over previous allegations that senior government officials were involved in grabbing public land.
One journalist confronted him directly, recalling his past claims that the president and principal secretaries allegedly moved at night to identify and grab land.
The reporter also asked him to substantiate accusations about disputed land in areas such as Kibiko and Angata Barikoi.
“Now, when you say that the president moves around at night without resting, what evidence do you have? And please also address these…,” the journalist posed.
Rather than offering fresh details to support his earlier assertions, Gachagua shifted the conversation, questioning why the leaders he had accused had not publicly refuted his claims.
“Have you heard him complain? If it were not true, wouldn’t he complain? The one who has complained and insulted me is Sudi,” he responded.

What did Gachagua reveal in Sudi’s audio?
Moments later, the former deputy president reached for his phone and announced that he would play a voice note he said came from Sudi.
He turned the audio on, filling the room with what appeared to be angry remarks and heavy insults directed at him.
“I must! That is Sudi who sent it,” Gachagua said firmly as journalists reacted with shock and frustration over the explicit language captured in the audio.

The recording, according to Gachagua, proved his point that some leaders allied to the president were openly attacking him.
He seized the moment to expand his criticism beyond Sudi, arguing that the language reflected a broader culture among Ruto’s allies.
Gachagua also mentioned Farouk Kibet, Ruto’s long-time aide, accusing him of using similar harsh language against former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
“I want you to understand. These are the leaders who walk with William Ruto. Do you hear the language they use? Farouk insults Uhuru Kenyatta, Sudi insults me with names that should never come from the mouth of a leader. But you asked me what the problem is. You know they say that when you are in a hole, the first thing you do is dig deeper so that you can find a way out,” Gachagua added.
