A few years back, the taxman intensified its efforts to pursue tax evaders who showcase lavish lifestyles on social media.
When KRA invested on tracking Kenyans’ online lifestyles
The leadership of KRA explained that the agency had already invested in advanced technology designed to expand the tax base and bring more Kenyans into compliance.
It noted that these tools will be used to scan social media accounts, gather relevant information, and cross-check it against official records to identify individuals living beyond their declared means.
The agency emphasised that even if specific assets like cars cannot be directly traced, the technology could link individuals to other data points, enabling the authority to verify their tax records.
Alongside this crackdown, KRA urged young people to focus on legitimate business ventures and hard work so they can contribute to the country’s revenue system.
It expressed hope that the youth will secure good jobs, earn money legally, and pay taxes, which in turn would allow them to enjoy a fulfilling life.
Despite his encouragement, KRA made it clear that the initiative to monitor social media for signs of tax evasion will continue.
It pointed out that many young people are posting images of themselves in expensive outfits, reinforcing the need for vigilance in ensuring that lifestyles displayed online align with declared incomes.
