Six-year-old Ashley Joy and her classmate Liz Wambui died on the spot on the afternoon of Monday, October 6, after debris from a building under construction next to the school fell on them.
Speaking to Citizen TV, Ashley’s dad painfully recalled that the little girl’s last moments with the family were when she was escorted to school by her mum on Monday morning.
At around 1pm, a neighbour called him and informed him about the incident that had happened at Ashley’s school, not knowing that his daughter was among the victims.
“As I was heading to Mama Lucy, I received a strange call. The woman asked me if I was Baba Ashley. The lady told me directly that my child is dead,” he said.
He noted that when he arrived at the hospital, he found his daughter’s lifeless body lying on the bed. She had no visible injuries.
“She was in the school uniform. I touched her and there was no response,” he added, amidst pain.
Another Kayole family mourns
On their part, the family of Liz, the other student who died, made a heartbreaking revelation, noting that the young girl had also lost a sibling a few months ago, before her death.
Liz’s grandmother noted that the PP2 girl was looking forward to her graduation on October 24.
“She was just five years old and was so happy about her upcoming graduation. We had bought everything. She had worn her graduation outfit and taken some pictures with it while awaiting the day,” the grandma noted.

A close relative of Liz also revealed that she heard the children at the Kayole school screaming in fear, and she rushed to check on Liz.
“I asked the teachers and parents where Liz was, and we were told that we should go and check her at Uwezo,” she added.
This comes as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations starts investigations at the school. The owner of the collapsed building is still at large.
“We ask any well-wisher to help us with the burial preparations of our daughter. We need to ferry her remains to Murang’a for the burial,” Liz’s grandmother said.
