Speaking on Friday, October 17, Oburu dispelled rumours that suggested Raila had requested to be buried next to his mother in his will.

“I would like to clarify something which has been in the press. This matter of where the grave of Raila is or where Raila will be interred, the particular spot. The press has been saying that in Raila’s will, he said he wanted to be buried next to his mother and that we have verified it, and now we are burying him next to his father. Nothing could be further from the truth,” Oburu stated.

Where will Raila be buried?

The Siaya senator, who is also the co-chair of Raila’s national funeral committee, stated that he has seen the will and is aware of the former prime minister’s final wishes.

“The will clearly states that Raila would like to be buried in the place where his father and mother were buried. That is where Raila is going to be buried,” he added.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader’s parents were buried at the Kang’o Ka Jaramogi homestead in Bondo, Siaya county.

Oburu stated that whether Raila will be buried next to his mother or his father is a non-issue and should not be that important to the public.

“Whether it is next to the father or the mother, both of them are his parents, and that was our decision. Thank you all, and only plead for peace,” Oburu said.

A man identified as Japheth Siome, who participated in the digging, opened up about his feelings of fulfilment.

Siome, a medical superintendent at Usigu Sub-County Hospital in Bondo, joined a group of men from the area to dig the grave of the fallen political heavyweight.

In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, Siome referred to the exercise as the best gift he could give to the political icon who spent most of his life fighting for the country’s democracy.

The first stages of the grave preparation were carried out using an excavator, but manual labour was employed due to the hard nature of the ground.
