According to some of the family members who spoke to TUKO.co.ke, a police officer alleged to have fired the shot that killed their kin, Yvonne Lucy, has reached out to them seeking forgiveness.

The family is now questioning how the officer, who is said to have been arrested after the incident, accessed a mobile phone to call them.

It has also raised concerns over the circumstances under which the case against the officer was transferred from Homa Bay to Kendu Bay Law Courts.

Felix Onyango, the brother of the deceased, said the officer had called several times seeking forgiveness, claiming the incident had happened by mistake.

He also revealed that a police officer had approached him in hospital after his sister’s surgery, asking if the bullet had been found inside her body. The officer reportedly wanted the bullet to be given to him.

The brother said he saw the officer for the second time after receiving the call from the officer suspected of firing the bullet that killed his sister.

“I am wondering how he got the phone to call me, not once, not twice. This is the person who killed my sister, and he knows me. They said they arrested him, and he’s in the cell, but it’s almost the same as he is a free man,” Onyango said.

“Will we really get justice? I’m afraid,” he added.

The woman is said to have been hit by a stray bullet fired into the air to disperse a crowd that had gathered for the late Raila Odinga’s night vigil on October 17.

The father, Joakim Oketch, also revealed that the said police officer had reached out to him through a friend, seeking forgiveness.

He, however, insisted that he was only interested in getting justice for his daughter.

“He killed my daughter, and he is now asking for forgiveness through my friends, as who? It means he did it intentionally,” Oketch.

“The incident happened in Homa Bay, and that is where the course of justice should begin. We are only going to move to a different place if summoned by the court and not any other cheap channel. My daughter must get justice,” he added.
