On Wednesday, October 22, a tragic accident occurred at 12:15 am at Kitaleba Village, near Asili Farm, along the Kampala-Gulu Highway.
Speaking to the Daily Monitor, two lucky survivors narrated that the accident happened after a Nile Star bus attempted to overtake a lorry along the highway.
As the driver of the bus overtook, another Public Service Vehicle from Planet Bus company was also overtaking a smaller car in the opposite direction, leading to the tragic collision.
The lorry and the smaller car were also involved in the accident.
According to Sebeet Kawawa, the survivor, all his seatmates on the Nile Star bus perished, and he only survived miraculously.
He recalled that he thought he was waking up from a dream when he was rescued from under the wreckage. He said he heard others calling for help.
He was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Kawawa said the accident occurred due to reckless driving.
“I still cannot figure out how I survived the nasty accident that took us by surprise. The passengers I shared a seat with all died. We were three on the seat and I was the only survivor,” he said.

On his part, Omia Zubeir, an MP aspirant in the upcoming Ugandan elections, also survived the accident by a whisker.
Zubeir said the bus picked him up from his home, as he readied to present his nomination papers upon arrival.
“It is a miracle that I survived because the two colleagues I travelled with all died. There was no way I could have helped them,” he poignantly said.
He survived with serious injuries to his leg and head, but he had to first rush to submit his nomination papers before returning to the hospital to continue receiving treatment.
