The situation has been linked to financial exploitation by women who enter relationships purely for material gain.
Why are Kiambu men facing emotional breakdowns?
According to relationship counsellor Susan Gitau, the number of men suffering emotional breakdowns after being deceived by partners pretending to love them has sharply increased in the region.
The counsellor said that many of the victims report financial ruin, heartbreak, and even suicidal thoughts.
“Relationships built on deceit and money have become dangerous. Some men have ended up in violent confrontations, and a few have narrowly escaped death after discovering they were being used,” Gitau noted.
She also noted that money-driven relationships were fueling gender-based violence across communities.
Several men shared painful experiences of betrayal after investing heavily in women who later abandoned them.
How Kiambu man lost KSh 500k
One of the victims, Boniface Elvis, 35, revealed that he spent over KSh 500,000 on a woman who promised commitment, only for her to vanish after receiving funds to start a salon and boutique.
Elvis, who works as a marketer, said that the heartbreak nearly drove him into despair.
“I thought we were building a future together. I gave her everything I could, but when the money stopped, she left without explanation,” he recalled.
Another victim, Francis Kinuthia, revealed that he almost took his own life after learning that the woman he was supporting was spending his money on another man.
“I have never gone through what I went through at that time. It was the worst period in my life. It shattered me completely,” Kinuthia said.
On his part, life coach Paul Collins described the trend as a national concern, noting that many men suffer in silence due to societal expectations that discourage them from speaking out.

“Once the man falls into the trap, the emotional and financial damage can be devastating,” Collins warned.
At the same time, Gitau urged young men to exercise caution in giving money where there is no clear commitment and advised young women to avoid deceitful relationships.
She further warned that exploiting partners for financial gain not only destroys lives but could also lead to tragic outcomes.
