One of her close friends, Val Ocharo, who lives in Little Elm, Texas, shared a moving tribute recounting their friendship.

“Death has robbed us of a happy soul. When daddy passed away, Hellen Nyar Okinda came to my house within hours. She was still in her scrubs, it was at the onset of COVID-19. She brought me a box of masks and consoled me. When it came time for me to go home, she stayed behind to ensure my kids were okay. She was always kind, respectful, and generous.

One time, we met at Jomo Kenyatta Airport on our way back to the US. I needed to pay for my suitcase but didn’t have cash on me, Hellen paid for my excess luggage. I am deeply shocked and saddened by your death. Rest with the angels.”
Her words captured the essence of who Hellen was, a compassionate and selfless person who was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Shiro pens painful goodbye to sister Hellen
Hellen’s sister, Sally Jones Shiro Min Otis from Narok county, shared a heartfelt post accompanied by a throwback photo of the two enjoying a joyful moment ten years ago.
“My sister, this day 10 years ago we were laughing and making fun of Otis in my belly. You kept chasing me from the kitchen because you and the girls had it together.
After Doc’s baby shower, you stayed one more day to watch me make fun of Mr. Chairman with his Chelsea and Cowboys shenanigans. We laughed so hard after both of his teams lost,” she recalled.
Shiro went on to remember how Hellen advised her to save the money she received during her baby shower.
“You told me I’d need it when Otis was due. Girl, I’ve been crying all morning. I don’t even have the strength to come to Texas for Thanksgiving. I am tired, Nyarthiwa. God’s work has no mistake. Sleep well, my sister.”
Outpouring of love and condolences for Hellen
Other friends also shared their grief and memories of Hellen online, as they struggled to accept her death.
M’Kenya Steve wrote:
“This stings hard and deep. Hellen Nyar Okinda, life at its best is fleeting. To the Okinda family and my DFW Texan family, pole sana. Hellen was a hardworking, respectful, and jovial woman. Your time with us was too short. Rest well.”
Lorraine Clementina added:
“Rest in peace, Hellen Nyar Okinda, a beautiful soul who became like a mother to me. Ever since I lost my mum, you’ve been there with open arms, love, and comfort. I’ll never forget that.”
Sara Orinda recalled their last conversation noting they had a major to event
“Osiepa, we talked on the 24th. We were to go to a wedding on the 25th. You were very, very okay, mami. I am devastated.”

Former Maseno teacher dies in US
