Kieffer Moore netted a stunning perfect hat-trick to send Wrexham to a 3-2 win over Coventry, whose unbeaten run went up in smoke.
Coventry looked on course to make it seven wins on the spin when Ephron Mason-Clark opened the scoring with a tidy sliding finish.
The omens were not good for Wrexham given Frank Lampard’s side had scored 34 goals in 12 games before arriving in north Wales and the Red Dragons had won only one of their previous seven.
Wrexham always carried a threat though and Moore got his first when sweeping home with his right foot on 60 minutes. The header was next, powering home from another Josh Windass cross eight minutes later.
With Coventry on the ropes and out of ideas, Moore completed the perfect treble when scampering in behind and finishing crisply with his left-foot via a third Windass assist.
Coventry grabbed a late second through Tatsuhiro Sakamoto but ran out of time to grab an equaliser to see their 12-match unbeaten run come to a halt.
Lampard: We went from extraordinary to ordinary
Coventry boss Frank Lampard speaking to Sky Sports:
“We’ve been extraordinary for 12 games in the Championship, not many teams can do it and today we were ordinary. We’ve had a challenging week as we lost three of our back four as that’s been a strength at the backend of the pitch. But that’s not pointing at the players who came in, it was us as a whole, we weren’t quite at it.
“I smelt it at half-time. We were 1-0 up and we dropped a little. That can happen when you’re unbeaten in 12, maybe we believed in our own hype. I have bee trying to diffuse it all as this league is long. Don’t worry, we’re good but this is what happens to normal teams. We have to show what we are in the next games.”
Moore: We’ll kick on from here
Wrexham’s Kieffer Moore speaking to Sky Sports:
“I think we’ve shown over the course of the season some good performances.
“I think we really just needed a win like this against top of the table, so I think it really helped us. And yeah, we’ll kick on from it.”
