Mexico – At least 23 people, including children, have been confirmed dead following a fire incident in the northwestern Mexican city of Hermosillo.

The BBC reported that a blaze broke out on Saturday, November 1, in the centre of the northwestern city of Hermosillo at a branch of Waldo’s – Mexico’s largest discount chain.

Officials said the tragedy occurred around 3pm as the store was ‘packed with shoppers’ for the Day of the Dead holiday.

In a statement, regional Governor Alfonso Durazo said the exact cause of the fire had yet to be determined.

Durazo stated that children are among the victims, with a 15-year-old girl among those taken to the hospital.

Images from the scene showed thick, black smoke billowing from the building, with the flames appearing to have spread to cars parked in front of the shop.

“To the families who lost a loved one… I share your pain and offer you my full solidarity,” Durazo said in a video address.

He stated that an “extraordinary, transparent, and thorough” investigation was launched to determine the cause of the incident and identify those responsible.

What President Claudia Sheinbaum said about Mexico fire

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum shared her condolences with the families of the victims in a statement on X.

“My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the people who died in the fire that occurred in a store in downtown Hermosillo. I have been in contact with the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, to provide support as needed. I instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, to send a support team in order to assist the families and the injured,” Sheinbaum said.

The cause of the blast is under investigation, though officials have ruled out an attack or intentional violence.

Local media reports cite a possible electrical failure, with investigators looking at a transformer inside the store as the potential origin.

How 5 family members died in Isiolo fire

In other sad news, five family members died in a deadly night fire on Tuesday, July 15 in the Bulapesa area in Isiolo Town.

Citizen Digital reported that a 45-year-old woman and four children were burnt to death in a case of arson linked to a suspected love triangle.

The night fire claimed the lives of three siblings, their cousin, all aged between seven and 15 years, and their mother.

Sadly, there were no survivors in the inferno that destroyed properties of unknown value.
