Obiri set a time of 2:19:51 to set a long-standing record that has stood since 2003 to win her second title in New York.
Obiri led a clean Kenyan sweep as Sharon Lokedi and Sheila Chepkirui completed the podium places.
The race featured four heavy hitters, including Sifan Hassan, who has made a successful transition to road running. The 2024 Olympic champion came into New York on the back of winning the Sydney Marathon at the end of August.

Defending champion Sheila Chepkirui set the pace early on, crossing the 10K mark at 33:53. The three Kenyans changed positions upfront alongside American Fiona O’Keeffe, with Hassan keeping an eye from behind.
At one point, it appeared that the four women had shaken off Hassan, but the Ethiopian-born Dutchwoman characteristically battled her way back.
They went through the halfway mark in 1:11:01 with Hassan staying within touching distance.
The three Kenyans injected some pace once again and shook off Hassan for the second time, going through the 35K mark in 1:56:48.

After shaking off Hassan and O’Keeffe, Chepkirui maintained the lead, but with no major move from any of the Kenyans.
The side-by-side running continued until the 39.3K mark when Lokedi surged to the front. The 2022 New York Marathon took Obiri with her as Chepkirui started to struggle and eventually dropped off in third place.
With two kilometres to go, it became apparent that one of Obiri or Lokedi was going to win this year’s edition of the race, just like they did in Boston earlier this year.
Obiri bided her time, allowing Lokedi to run in front of her as they came around for the homestretch, setting up the stage for a sprint finish.
With one kilometre to go, Obiri made the most decisive move of the race, surging to the front with Lokedi offering no resistance.
Lokedi was third with a time of 2:20:07, while Chepkirui clocked 2:20:24. Hassan finished in sixth place, with O’Keeffe and Annie Frisbie taking fourth and fifth, respectively.
Kipruto wins in New York as Kipchoge finishes 17th
In the men’s marathon, Benson Kipruto led a Kenyan clean sweep, beating compatriot Alexander Mutiso on the line to win the race.
Kipruto became the first man to win all the marathon majors held in the USA after previous wins in Boston and Chicago.
Eliud Kipchoge was 17th in his New York Marathon debut as he completed all the marathon majors in the world.
