Nairobi – Siaya senator and acting ODM party leader Oburu Oginga has shared details about the medical condition that his late brother Raila Odinga suffered before his death in India.

In an interview with NTV on Sunday, November 2, Oburu narrated how President William Ruto hired a private jet to fly Raila to India for urgent medical treatment.
What disease was Raila Odinga suffering from?
The Siaya senator disclosed that his brother had been battling a clot in his head that needed urgent medical care; hence, the decision to fly him to India.

Oburu stated that doctors in Nairobi had prescribed strong medication to treat Raila, prompting him to stop public appearances a few weeks before his death.
“He had some clot on his head, and it was being resolved by doctors here in Nairobi, but they were using strong medicine, which was called steroids, which was wearing him down, which is why you saw him pulling out of some public functions,” Oburu said.
He revealed that President Ruto was forced to step in after medical specialists in Dubai and doctors in Kenya differed about Raila’s health condition.
During their meeting at Raila’s Karen home, they all agreed that there was the need to immediately evacuate the former prime minister to India.
The Siaya senator thanked Ruto for providing a chartered plane that flew the late ODM leader to Mumbai for urgent medical attention.
“We agreed that he must go there immediately because there were conflicting positions taken by doctors in Dubai and here. His personal doctor was even given an opportunity to look at the details. The president took that matter seriously and organised for his evacuation to India. I am very grateful to him for what he did. His quick reaction. We would not have managed to work that fast”

Was the clot in Raila’s head completely removed?
Oburu explained that doctors in India managed to clear the clot that was disturbing his brother.
He added that Raila left Mumbai for Kerala to recuperate; unfortunately, he passed away about a week later.
“When he went to India, they managed to clear that clot that was there in Mumbai. So, by the time he left the hospital there, he was up and about, alive and kicking. He went to recuperate in Kerala. He was there for about a week after being discharged from the hospital,” Oburu explained.

How did Oburu Oginga receive news of Raila’s death?
Meanwhile, Oburu opened up about the emotional turmoil he faced upon receiving the devastating news.
Speaking to NTV, Oburu revealed that he had spoken to Raila on the phone just hours before his passing.
On the morning of October 15, Oburu was preparing for a golfing session in Kisumu when he received a call from his sister, Wenwa, regarding Raila’s death.
