Mourners gathered in Ndumberi, Kiambu County, on Thursday, November 20, to bid their final farewell to the late singer, whose burial took place at her home in Mugumo Estate.
Pastor Kanyari, who shared two children with Betty Bayo, was invited to deliver a eulogy for his ex-wife.
When called to the podium, Kanyari began by admitting that speaking in English was not his strength.
How did Pastor Kanyari eulogise ex-wife Betty Bayo?
He then reflected on their first meeting, their early days of dating, and how they quickly moved in together, just months before welcoming their first child.
“How do I even begin to eulogise Betty? Thirteen years ago, in the hustle and bustle of Nairobi, fate brought our paths together. I met this lovely, petite, smiling young woman whose gentleness could calm the busiest of days. We connected instantly, and within weeks, we couldn’t imagine life apart,” Kanyari shared.
He spoke fondly of their relationship and recounted both the joyful and challenging moments as they navigated life together.
Kanyari paused several times, funnily mentioning his struggle with reading English, which prompted laughter from the mourners.
Did Kanyari offer apology to Betty Bayo?
He reflected on their journey together.
“You never denied them a father, and you never poisoned their hearts. Instead, you surrounded them with love. I used to joke with you when the children came over, saying ‘mimi ndio niko’ (I am the one here), but it was always in good humour. Deep down, I respected your decision to move on with your life,” he said.
Kanyari also touched on their separation, which had attracted public attention and fueled many different stories and apologised over it.
“I am deeply sorry that my name and the drama surrounding it brought you so much hardship. But even after all that, we still found laughter and talked about how your brand only grew bigger. Betty, you were a hardworking woman, a forgiving soul, a loving mother, and a true friend,” Kanyari added.
Bishop Wanderi throws shade at Pastor Kanayari
While his speech was lighthearted and filled with humour, Bishop Wanderi found it inappropriate.
The bishop, who was presiding over the service, expressed his disappointment.
“The little girl, Sky, likes to play, but have you seen her playing today? What would make you laugh to the point where your teeth are visible while the children are mourning?” the bishop said, addressing Kanyari’s behaviour.
He continued:
“What makes you behave this way? Is this a time for laughter, as if we are celebrating Betty’s death? Let’s stop mixing emotions like this. If we are mourning, let us mourn. We can laugh starting tomorrow.”
