When the dam was built, more than 600,000 acres around the Tocantins River were flooded, displacing 32,000 people. Tucuruí and other hydro projects were opposed by some residents and activists. That resistance has contributed to the growth of various civic movements, including those by landless workers.
The owner of the dam, AXIA Energia, said it has compensated people displaced by the project and used the seed bank to replenish deforested areas throughout the Amazon.
