The bodies of the deceased were taken to Tower morgue; among the deceased were reportedly four students who had just completed their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
As seen in the low-quality photos captured from the accident scene, the matatu was completely destroyed in the crash, underscoring the severity of the accident, while the lorry also sustained heavy damage.
Crowds gathered at the scene to assist police in the rescue efforts.
The wreckages were also towed out of the scene.
Former Kibwezi MP Philip Kaloki extended his condolences to the bereaved families and urged motorists and other road users to exercise greater caution.
“The loss of life is heartbreaking. It reminds us how fragile and precious every moment is. I appeal to all road users and those responsible for ensuring safety on our roads to strictly adhere to the rules that protect the public, especially during this festive season. To the people of Mbooni, poleni sana. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” he said.
