The Mutaagas had spent more than 30 years in Zurich before deciding to retire in Uganda, hoping to enjoy quieter days in the place where their life journey began.
But in early July, their dream of a peaceful homecoming was shattered when they were found dead in their residence in Lugonjo, Nakiwogo Cell, Entebbe Municipality.
According to Ugandan police, the couple were attacked on the night of July 6 by unknown assailants.
Why The Mutaagas’ children fear home
Two casual labourers from their home were arrested to assist with the investigations, but authorities have since admitted that the motive remains unclear despite the involvement of several intelligence agencies.
During their memorial ceremony held in June, their kids, Isabel Najitta Mutaaga and Mark Ernest Kabenge Mutaaga, honoured their parents virtually from abroad.
The children, devastated by the lack of answers, pegged their reluctance to travel to Uganda on fear and have instead arranged for their parents’ bodies to be repatriated.

Mutaagas killed over family dispute?
Police reports indicated that the attackers may have accessed the home with the intent to rob, though no conclusive evidence has been found.
Officers collected samples from the scene for forensic analysis and have interviewed neighbours, a housemaid, and a shamba boy who first raised the alarm.
“We firmly denounce this brutal crime and want to assure the public that we are fully committed to bringing those responsible to justice,” police stated in the days following the killings.
As detectives continue to pursue leads, there have been widespread speculations that the deaths were a result of a family dispute.
Police release suspect’s photo
In a statement released by the Uganda Police Force, photos of the man suspected of committing the double murders were released on social media.
Alongside the photo was an audio clip of his voice in which he is heard calling out to Deborah to save her husband.

The suspect also complained about how the couple’s children were in school, unlike him who was at home suffering.
With their parents’ remains soon to arrive in Zurich, the Mutaaga children face the painful task of laying their mother and father to rest far from the country they returned to with such hope.
For now, they continue to plead for justice, hoping someday the truth behind their parents’ final moments will finally come to light.
