On Sunday, November 23, a construction truck collided head-on with a public service vehicle (PSV) matatu between Manzoni and Machakos Junction.

How did the Machakos Junction accident occur?

Preliminary investigations indicate the speeding construction truck reportedly veered off its lane and collided head-on with a matatu travelling from Nairobi to Machakos.

From the impact, the matatu rolled over to one side, spewing luggage, including farm produce, on the busy road.

The 33-seater matatu was en route to Kathiani, Machakos county, from Nairobi when the deadly crash occurred.

Rescue operations are currently underway as emergency teams work to retrieve survivors and attend to the injured.

The injured have been rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for urgent medical attention as police continue investigating the incident.

Police have not released the official statement on the number of fatalities, but witnesses said several people died on the spot.

Photos from the scene show how bad the accident was, as the PSV matatu was completely mangled on the front side.

The lorry involved in the accident was a concrete-mixer truck and was also considerably damaged on the front side from the impact.

How many people died in the Makueni accident?

The accident comes less than 24 hours after six people were killed in a road accident involving a lorry and a matatu in Makueni county.

A police report indicated that the speeding lorry rammed into the stationary matatu owned by Wamasaa Classic at Nguluni Stage in Mbooni East on the Tawa-Itangini highway.

The passenger vehicle was to leave for Machakos Town when the accident occurred on Friday, November 21.

Mbooni East sub-county police commander Ibrahim Karani confirmed the crash, noting that several injured passengers were rushed to the Makueni Sub-County Hospital.
