Advocate Wangari has shared the heartbreaking story of a young mother whose fight for justice ended not in freedom, but in tragedy.

In an emotional TikTok video, Wangari disclosed that the woman, arrested shortly after giving birth, had been imprisoned with her infant daughter.
How female inmate died
While the mother’s health deteriorated a few days ago, prompting her transfer to hospital, she sadly passed away, her short life closing in silence before her voice could be heard in court.
Her baby girl, less than a year old, remains in remand. For days, the child has been sleeping in a cell, waiting for a mother who will never return.
Wangari’s legal team had been in court tirelessly seeking the release of the mother and safe placement of the child, but the family’s poverty kept them locked in a system they could not navigate.
Bail was initially set at KSh 100,000, later reduced to KSh 40,000 following an application by Wangari’s team, still far beyond the family’s means.
Inmate gave up before securing freedom
They returned to court to request a personal bond, hoping her worsening health would allow for compassionate release. Instead of a new hearing date, they were handed her death summary.
“Her defence was ready, yet her body and mind gave up before the court heard her truth,” Wangari wrote.
The tragedy exposes the deep emotional and psychological wounds inflicted when vulnerable women are detained after childbirth.

Wangari explained that the immediate postpartum period is fragile, and arrest at such a time shocks the nervous system.
She added that detention then traps the brain in survival mode, broken sleep, anxious thoughts, and spiralling despair.
How to support grieving family
When poverty makes freedom dependent on money, trauma compounds into what advocates describe as moral injury, where institutions meant to protect end up causing profound harm.
As loved ones mourn her passing, her family now faces the heavy burden of arranging a dignified burial and the lifelong responsibility of raising her young daughter.
Wangari is appealing to the public for support, whether to help with funeral expenses or to ensure the child grows up knowing she is surrounded by compassion, not forgotten by the world.

Meanwhile, Wangari vowed to continue fighting so no other mother or child is crushed in the painful gap between law and justice.
