A young woman in Nairobi has shared her story of heartbreak, faith, and renewal after a series of painful events in her life.

Lule Adan, who now goes by the name Juanita Karega, grew up in a typical African home, raised alongside nine siblings.
She recalled feeling empowered by her parents, especially her father, who ensured they attended school and had everything they needed.
However, the man was fierce in his own way. He was brutal in his punishments when any of them made a mistake, and at times, he would resort to physical discipline.
“Like any human being, he had his weaknesses. He struggled with anger issues and would easily be triggered by the smallest inconvenience at home. We walked on eggshells around him for many years,” Lule said.
Why did Lule Adan cut off parents?
Coming from the Garre community in Mandera, Lule explained that women had no voice and were not allowed to speak up, even when they felt oppressed.
To add to this, she was raised in a staunch Muslim family where women were not encouraged to speak, especially when tough or serious decisions were being made.
According to the mother of two, the beatings and violence she experienced growing up were intended to silence them and instil fear so they would never speak up.
However, as Lule grew older, she began questioning many of the things that had happened in her life. She started speaking up for herself, and that’s when the violence directed at her increased.
“One day, I spoke out about something, and it reached a point where my father beat me and even strangled me. I think that was the moment I realised we couldn’t have a rational conversation, and I made the decision to leave home,” she shared.
She walked out of her parents’ house in 2019 and found refuge with one of her friends.
“I had two options: either stay and risk losing my life, or leave, which would mean my father might end up in jail. I love him so much, and I didn’t want that to happen. So, I decided to leave. I didn’t tell them, but when I sought refuge with my friend, I reached out and kept in touch with my family,” she explained.
Lule clarified that she did not completely cut ties with her parents but wanted them to know she was safe, to ease their worry.
After finishing school, she was fortunate enough to secure a job and move into her own home.
For Lule, the freedom from her father was exhilarating. She renounced her religion and began living life on her own terms.

Did Lule Adan become Christian?
She went to parties, used drugs, and immersed herself fully in a secular lifestyle until she met a friend who introduced her to Christianity.

“I deep down believed there was more to life than what I was experiencing, and I chose to take a different path from everyone in my family. I backslid at times, but eventually, I gave my life fully to Christ,” she said.
On her wedding day, her family was absent, and a stranger walked her down the aisle.
She shared that this was the day she decided to leave her painful past behind, forgive herself, and move forward with her husband.
Now a mother of two, she mentioned that she returned home once, but things were not the same.
To her, the journey of reconciliation takes time, but she still loves her family, despite the distance between them.
“I have learnt many things from how I was raised. I promised myself I would make my children feel special and seen as individuals, just as my dad did for us. The one thing I will not carry forward is the violent way of punishing,” she said.
