“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing…” the verse says, a reminder not to parade acts of kindness.
Only after Raila’s passing did many realise how deeply he embraced this teaching.
Was Raila Odinga stingy?
“People joked that Raila’s pocket seemingly had a snake that would bite him should he place his hand inside to give people money, suggesting he was a mean guy. That is not true,” Dennis Onsarigo, who worked as the press secretary for Raila’s 2022 presidential campaign secretariat, said.

Onsarigo said the issue was raised with Raila in 2022.
“He said that we should leave it as it was.”
Onsarigo noted that Raila would even send them carrying millions to donate, but instruct them not to announce it publicly, as it would defeat the purpose of the gesture.
The living conditions of Raila’s bodyguards serve as proof of his generosity.
One of them was the late George Oduor, a loyal aide whose name had been dragged across social media by claims that he had died in poverty.
But as mourners gathered to bury Oduor in April, the truth about his wealth surfaced.

Tucked away in the calm of his rural home stands an impressive two-storey house he had built.
The home features majestic pillars at the front entrance. Oduor’s home has a well-manicured garden and a driveway paved with cabro blocks.

A large balcony on the first floor overlooks the entrance to the compound.
His wealth was also on display after his burial, as he was interred in an elegant mausoleum designed with soft cream walls, polished white marble flooring streaked with grey, subtle recessed lighting, and a central plaque bearing his name, life dates, and a photograph.
The structure stands as a tribute to the respect he earned through years of loyal service and a strong bond with the Odinga family.

Another of Raila’s trusted men, Maurice Ogeta, who served him for over 18 years, was also handsomely paid.
Weeks after Raila’s burial, images emerged of Ogeta inspecting a newly completed three-storey apartment block.
Painted in grey and white and crowned with water tanks, the building was the product of years of quiet effort.
In a gesture echoing Raila’s own generosity, Ogeta gifted each of his family members a one-bedroom home over five years.

The application was made public in a gazette notice.
