Mercy Nyamoita Mong’are, a mother from Kisii, is still reeling from the grief of losing her firstborn, Kyle, allegedly poisoned by a relative.
Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, Nyamoita shared that she was happily married to a man she had met during her school days.
Their two-year marriage had been filled with joy and love, as she had built a strong relationship with her husband’s family.

Soon, their happiness was further expanded when she became pregnant with their first child. However, they never imagined that their lives would take a heartbreaking turn just months later.
“We never argued with my mother-in-law; everything was fine until my son passed away. After that, nothing was ever the same,” Nyamoita said, her voice heavy with sorrow.
Why did Mercy Nyamoita leave son with her sister?
The 28-year-old mother explained that her son had always been a healthy baby. On the weekend before he fell ill, he showed no signs of sickness and appeared perfectly fine.
“For the six months he was alive, my baby never got seriously ill. Maybe just the flu here and there, but I’d give him some syrup, and he’d be okay. But then, one day, he suddenly became very ill, and that’s how I lost him,” she recalled.
Nyamoita said she followed her usual morning routine: preparing her baby’s food, bathing him, and feeding him before heading to work.
Her sister would care for Kyle while she worked at her electronics shop, and she would pick him up at 4 pm when she finished her shift.
However, that day, after arriving at work, Nyamoita received a call an hour later from her sister, telling her that the baby was unwell.
“She said that my son had started feeling unwell after my mother-in-law had held him. He began crying, and couldn’t stop. It seemed strange,” Nyamoita explained.

Initially dismissing the urgency, she returned her focus to work. But a second call from her husband soon followed, informing her that their son was still unwell.
The heartbroken mother left work, hoping that the illness was nothing too serious, and rushed home to check on Kyle.
Nyamoita was horrified when she saw her son; he was not the baby she had left that morning. Kyle appeared severely dehydrated, his eyes sunken, and his body weak.
In a panic, she immediately called her husband to update him on their son’s condition.
“He told me he was far away and would call his mother to check on the baby. My mother-in-law then came over to assess the situation and suggested we give Kyle traditional medicine,” she recalled.
However, being in the healthcare sector, Nyamoita refused to follow that advice. Instead, she took Kyle to a private hospital, where he was admitted for three days.
For a short while, it seemed as if Kyle was recovering, and he was about to be discharged. But then, he suddenly began convulsing.
The attending doctor recommended that Kyle be referred to Kenyatta National Hospital for further tests and specialised care.
Upon arriving at the emergency department, Kyle vomited blood.

Was Kyle poisoned?
“My child was immediately placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and the doctors ran tests. They found that his kidneys weren’t functioning and that he needed dialysis,” Nyamoita said, struggling to hold back her tears.
She recounted how everything escalated quickly, and in no time, she was told that Kyle had passed away.
The doctors informed her that her son had ingested poison, which caused his organs to fail.
“According to the doctors, someone made him lick something that got stuck in his throat, which is why he couldn’t breastfeed. It burned his oesophagus,” she said, choking on her words.
What happened at Baby Kyle’s funeral
The tragedy continued even in death. Nyamoita recalled how, on the day they were taking Kyle’s body home, the hearse refused to move as they approached the house. It only moved when her mother-in-law got out of the vehicle.
At the funeral, the casket reportedly fell onto its side as it was being lowered into the grave. Nyamoita believes that these strange events were signs that her baby’s killer was present.
“When it was time to throw the dirt into the grave, I did it, and so did my sisters and colleagues. But my mother-in-law and husband didn’t participate. In Kisii culture, that would have brought misfortune upon them,” she explained.
