“My brother left his phone in a taxi. He realised it after leaving the car and called the driver from another phone. The driver admitted he had the phone and even confirmed it via text. He demanded KSh 3,000 before returning it, which my brother agreed to pay after getting the phone. Later, the driver switched off his phone and is now unreachable. Si mtusaidie,” she lamented.
TUKO.co.ke reached out to Achieng’ for clarity and in-depth information, and she disclosed that nothing much had changed.
She added that the company had contacted her and expressed willingness to help her brother retrieve his phone and resolve any pending issues.
Where was Samuel Joel going when he forgot his device?
“He was travelling to Utawala from Lavington. The driver shared his location after my brother forgot his phone in the cab and also shared how much he would charge to deliver it. He later switched off his phone. The company responded, but they are taking us in circles,” she said.
According to the WhatsApp chats, the driver indicated that Samuel would have to pay KSh 3,200 to have the phone delivered.
During the negotiation, the driver said he was having breakfast and should not be held accountable for Samuel’s carelessness.
There were two missed calls as Samuel tried to reach him, and when he texted again, the messages were not delivered.
Kenyans react to Achieng’ Otieno’s Facebook post
The post sparked mixed reactions from social media users, some of whom shared their own experiences:
Joy Kendi:
“Had bought a new phone, a Google Pixel 10. I was tipsy kidogo, so we took a Bolt with my friend. I had the new and old phones, so I forgot one in the car. My friend called the driver in the morning. Fortunately, he said yes, he had collected it from the back seat, but he had already travelled to Nyeri. I had to wait for two days until Monday when he brought it. Imagine, he brought it without charging me. Some people are good. I gave him KSh 2,000.”

Njoroge Githu Jeremiah:
“Dear clients, sometimes it might not be the driver’s fault when you leave your belongings behind. Remember, you are not the only one entering the vehicle, and the next client might take what you left without the driver noticing. The driver cannot inspect the vehicle after every trip due to back-to-back requests.”
Ndirangu Markus Angelo:
“If he refuses to bring it, there are other ways to handle such matters without being physical.”
Thaddeus Patriots:
“The driver was willing to deliver the parcel. He called you at 9:23am in the morning; you responded at 2:59pm. Who is to blame?”
Murage James:
“This is one of those moments where the interaction between the owner of the phone and the finder determines whether it will be returned, mailed, or taken to the nearest police station. If the driver doubts he will be paid when he brings it back, trust me, he won’t use his fuel to deliver it.”
