On Sunday, December 7, a public service vehicle belonging to Kinatwa Shuttle Sacco collided with a commercial trailer, killing seven people and leaving 11 others with injuries.

What action has NTSA taken after the Mombasa Road accident?

While confirming that the crash left several people dead, NTSA sent its condolence message to the families of the accident victims.

The authority announced that it has deployed road safety auditors and inspectors to the scene of a fatal crash to carry out a detailed analysis and begin investigations into the cause.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and friends, and we wish those receiving medical attention a full and speedy recovery. We have immediately deployed a team of road safety auditors and inspectors to the scene to conduct a detailed analysis,” NTSA said.

Is Kinatwa Sacco cooperating with NTSA?

The authority added that Kinatwa Sacco, whose vehicle was involved in the crash, is cooperating fully with the relevant agencies.

“Kinatwa Sacco is fully cooperating with the Authority and all relevant agencies as comprehensive investigations into the cause of the crash continue,” the authority said.

NTSA called on all public service, commercial and private vehicle drivers to exercise maximum caution on the roads and to observe traffic rules.

“We call on all public service, commercial and private vehicle drivers to exercise maximum caution on our roads. Drive safely by adhering to speed limits, overtaking responsibly, taking breaks when fatigued, and remaining fully alert at all times. Let us all commit to safer driving now and throughout the festive season to prevent further loss of lives. We remain steadfast in our commitment to the highest standards of road safety, especially during this festive season,” the authority said.

The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) confirmed that the accident involved a matatu belonging to Kinatwa Sacco Shuttle.

MAK blamed the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for its reluctance to upgrade the busy highway into a dual carriageway.

According to eyewitnesses, the matatu belonging to the Kinatwa company was heading towards Mombasa and was overtaking other vehicles before colliding with the truck.

How many people died in the Busia accident?

On Friday, December 5, another road crash threw families into mourning and raised fresh concerns over road safety along the Bumala–Port Victoria route.

According to authorities, the matatu was travelling from Bumala town towards Port Victoria when it suddenly veered off the road and rolled several times, killing four people.

Early reports indicate the vehicle may have burst its front tyre, a mechanical failure that likely caused the driver to lose control.
